Bad Idea!

Sloppy Joe with ground Moose meat.

History

Sloppy Joe’s are part of every American childhood served at parties to the delight of all children except me. Basically it’s spaghetti sauce made with ground beef,  ketchup and BBQ sauce served on a hamburger bun. (no real tomatoes)

Being an avid hater of ketchup and sweet dinner foods plus having serious issues with  food that left red stains around my mouth for the rest of the day, Sloppy Joes were and remain my nemesis. So how did I end up deviating from my original menu idea, Moose burgers with a creamy cranberry sauce served on sauteed polenta cakes? Well I decide to browse the net to see if there was anything more inspiring than ground moose meat, bread crumbs and eggs all smashed together. Sloppy Joe kept appearing during my search so I thought in all my mighty confidence, I bet I can put together a Sloppy Joe inspired gourmet sauce that would be super yummy on that polenta. Fresh tomatoes blanched and peeled, onions sauteed, a few cranberries for the wild touch and SHAZAM! It was awful.

So off to the cupboard to pull out the ketchup buried in dust for the just in case and that BBQ sauce that better suites a steak. My man comes yawning from the bedroom and asks so whats for dinner.

Grumble, grumble Sloppy Joe somethings…

I don’t like Polenta he says can I have it on white bread if I don’t like it?

Grumble, grumble.

We sit down and yes it looks like a Sloppy Joe it TASTES like a Sloppy Joe.

Well, I thought I would try something you haven’t had before. I hate it, but it tastes just like it should.

Really it just tastes like pasta sauce to me.

Right it would, wouldn’t it. Because in Sweden spaghetti bolognese, homemade or not, is served with big galops of ketchup on top. Just another reason to hate ketchup if you ask me. My eyebrows curl.

Regardless of my inability to enjoy the Joe, it’s still a tasty and authentic recipe if your not asking me.

RECIPE
Ingredients
500 grams of ground moose meat

1/2 onion chopped

Ketchup and BBQ sauce about 1/2 a cup each I suppose.

1/2 can of tomatoes

2-3 TBS Brown sugar

Handful of cranberries (optional)

Directions

Saute the onions then add the meat to brown. Throw in the rest and let simmer for 30 or so minutes.

Serve on hamburger buns or crappy white bread. I say crappy because it’s not good for you, but tastes great.

OR if you are feeling all gourmet on a thin cake of sauteed polenta.
